Art Deco in Perth Exhibition

Art Deco in Perth: A Glimpse into 1930s Elegance was an exhibition held at Perth Town Hall, presented by the Art Deco and Modernist Society of WA as part of the Boorloo Heritage Festival, an annual event presented by the City of Perth.

The exhibition invited visitors to immerse themselves in the glamour and sophistication of the Art Deco era. Through curated objects, architectural sketches and personal collections, it explored how 1930s design shaped local tastes in architecture, fashion and lifestyle — and told the story of Perth’s own Art Deco landmarks, both lost and still standing.

I was brought on to design the visual identity and all exhibition materials — including large-scale didactic panels, stylised illustrations, digital assets and promotional content.

The brief was to create a visual identity that had personality, while staying subtle enough to support (not overshadow) the objects and artworks on display. The direction was to keep the design:

  • Geometric and elegant
  • Refined but still vibrant
  • Rich in heritage and detail
  • Visually strong in low-light spaces
  • Grounded in Art Deco aesthetics

I developed a visual language that layered bold lines, geometric patterns and an elegant palette. The panel layouts were carefully designed to guide visitors through the narrative in a clear and engaging way, while the illustrations echoed the stylised forms of the era.

Every element of the identity was made to work seamlessly across formats — from large-scale panels to social tiles and signage — helping bring the story of Art Deco in Perth to life in a way that was both accessible and visually striking.

If you’re into design, architecture or just love a bit of old-school glamour, I highly recommend keeping an eye on the Art Deco and Modernist Society of WA for future events and exhibitions.
